Year 1 maths: what your child learns

In Year 1 children count to 100 in ones, twos, fives and tens, learn number bonds within 20, and meet halves and quarters of shapes and amounts. They also compare lengths, weights and capacities, tell the time to the hour and half past, recognise coins and notes, name 2-D and 3-D shapes and describe turns. Much of the work uses real objects and pictures, with written number sentences introduced alongside.
