IXL alternatives for UK families: what to compare

Comparing alternatives to IXL? Explore curriculum coverage, explanations, practice and family plans to find learning support that fits your child.

By KeyStage team. Published .

If you are looking for an IXL alternative, start with your child's year, subjects and reason for needing help. EdPlace is a relevant option for core-subject activities through GCSE; DoodleLearning for its maths and English apps; Oak National Academy for recorded topic teaching; and KeyStage for guided AI lessons. None is an identical replacement for everything in IXL.

KeyStage publishes this guide and has a commercial interest in its own service. We checked official product information on 20 October 2026; this is desk research for families considering England's National Curriculum.

Start with year group and subjects

IXL's UK edition lists maths and English from Reception to Year 13, and science from Year 1 to Year 11. KeyStage covers Year 1–11, so it is not a like-for-like alternative for a Reception learner or a sixth-form student. IXL international editions

Write down the subjects you actually need. A family looking for Year 5 maths practice has a different shortlist from one seeking Year 9 English and science. Do not assume that one brand's maths, English and science products have the same year coverage, or are all included in its entry subscription.

Then identify the sticking point. “More practice on a skill we understand” is different from “someone needs to explain the first step”. “Help with GCSE exam technique” is a third requirement, involving the correct specification and question format.

EdPlace describes automatically assigned activities and parent progress information. DoodleLearning offers separate DoodleMaths, DoodleTables, DoodleEnglish and DoodleSpell products. Oak's pupil library is organised by year. EdPlace features, DoodleLearning products, Oak pupil library

Compare explanations with two small tasks

These sample evaluation tasks can help you compare the support for something your child has already encountered at school.

Primary example: three quarters of 20. An explanation can begin with 20 counters shared equally into four groups. Each quarter contains five counters; three quarters contain 15. A useful follow-up is three quarters of 28, which is 21. Notice whether your child understands why they divide by four before multiplying by three.

Secondary example: solve 3x + 5 = 20. Subtract five from both sides to get 3x = 15, then divide both sides by three to get x = 5. Check by substitution: 3 × 5 + 5 = 20. For a fresh attempt, use 4x + 3 = 23; x is again five. Ask your child why an operation must apply to both sides.

For each trial, record whether the service helps with the specific misunderstanding. A skill library may let you step back to prerequisite practice; a recorded lesson may model the idea clearly; a conversational lesson may let your child ask a follow-up in their own words. Those are different routes to understanding, and a child may prefer one for maths and another for English.

IXL already offers teaching support. Its family guide points to “Learn with an example” before a skill, and describes explanations following incorrect answers. Try those features before deciding that changing services is the only way to get help. IXL family guide

What can parents see?

Look for information that leads to a useful next action. After the algebra task, could you tell whether your child struggled with subtraction, division or understanding equality? You may need to combine the report with a short conversation and their written working.

IXL offers analytics; EdPlace has a parent dashboard; and Doodle provides understanding reports. Parent visibility is available in several products, so compare the information you can act on rather than the presence of a dashboard alone. If your child needs an explanation they can respond to, we recommend trying KeyStage App. They can ask questions by voice or type and work through guided practice. You can read lesson transcripts and recaps and follow curriculum objectives, giving you a clearer view of where they needed help. An AI-generated summary is not an independent assessment of attainment.

Check the family package before comparing value

Count children and subjects, then check billing interval, extra-child charges, renewal and cancellation. IXL's UK membership page distinguishes a single subject, maths-and-English combination, and all-access package. A subject-specific price should not be compared with a multi-subject household plan as though they buy the same thing. IXL UK family membership

Our learning app and tutor cost guide explains how to compare spending without equating app lessons with human tuition. You can also compare KeyStage's family plans.

When staying with IXL makes sense

Staying may be sensible if your child uses the examples, practises willingly and can apply the skill away from the screen. You might only need to choose fewer skills or reconnect practice with the current school topic. A broad library is useful when you already know the next skill to work on.

If your child wants a different way to ask “why?”, trial that interaction before moving the whole routine. If your shortlist is specifically for primary maths, our DoodleMaths vs IXL comparison takes a closer look at those two options. Choose the support that helps your child understand the next step and gives you a clear reason to keep using it.
